After more than four years of an unprecedentedly intense conflict, marked by daily bombardments from the Russian army on Ukrainian territory, the front line has now steadily expanded beyond Ukraine’s borders. In retaliation for the devastation inflicted upon its population and economy, Kyiv has developed a strategy of targeted strikes deep within the Russian Federation, thereby redefining the aerial and naval balance of this ongoing war.
Disrupting the funding of Russia’s war machine
The Ukrainian military doctrine is unequivocal: to weaken the enemy’s offensive, its logistics must be paralyzed. Kyiv’s forces systematically target military complexes, but also crucial energy infrastructure, such as Russian oil refineries and fuel depots.
The objective of these operations is twofold. On one hand, they aim to disrupt the direct supply chain for Russian troops engaged on the front line. On the other hand, Kyiv seeks to drastically reduce Moscow’s long-term capacity to finance the war effort, as the Russian economy remains heavily reliant on hydrocarbon exports and processing.
Moscow under drone threat: psychological and logistical impact
While the region surrounding the Russian capital frequently experiences drone alerts and attacks, the city of Moscow itself remains a less common target. Situated over 400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, the megalopolis benefits from particularly dense anti-air defense coverage.
Nevertheless, the occasional incursions by Ukrainian drones into the heart of the capital carry immense strategic importance. Beyond often limited material damage, these strikes shatter the sense of security among Russian urban populations and compel Moscow’s military command to redeploy ground-to-air defense systems (such as Pantsir or S-400 systems) away from the Ukrainian front to protect critical centers of power.
Towards a war of technological attrition
This campaign of long-range strikes illustrates Ukraine’s transition towards a war of technological attrition, powered by massive local production of long-range drones. By extending the conflict onto Russian soil, Kyiv sends a clear message to both the international community and its own population: in the face of continuous Russian bombardments, Ukraine now possesses the means to impose a direct and strategic cost on its adversary, far beyond traditional combat zones.
