UNESCO backs Mali’s 27th environment awareness drive in Bamako

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Mali office played a key role in the official kickoff of the 27th edition of Mali’s Quinzaine de l’Environnement in Bamako on June 6, 2026. The delegation, led by UNESCO Representative Mr. Ali Mohamed Sinane, joined government leaders, regional ministers, and development partners to underscore the event’s shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Alousséni Sanou, Mali’s Minister of State for Economy and Finance, acting on behalf of the Prime Minister. Attendees included Mali’s Environment Minister, counterparts from the Alliance of Sahel States (Burkina Faso and Niger), along with national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society, private sector representatives, and media professionals.

The 10-day program, running from June 5 to 15, 2026, is built around two high-impact themes:

Key themes shaping the 27th edition

  • Climate resilience for a safer future — aligned with World Environment Day, this focus spotlights urgent climate solutions and strategies for building resilience in vulnerable communities.
  • Pasture lands: recognize, respect, restore — tied to the International Day for Combating Desertification and Drought, this pillar highlights sustainable land management and the restoration of degraded ecosystems.

In a statement, UNESCO emphasized its ongoing partnership with Mali’s government to advance environmental education, promote sustainable practices, and support concrete actions that foster climate resilience and long-term ecological health.

Through workshops, public forums, and community-led initiatives, the event is designed to empower citizens, strengthen local leadership, and accelerate progress toward national and regional sustainable development goals.
