World bank boosts vital health and education access in Mali

The World Bank has given its approval for a significant $150 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA), specifically allocated to guarantee the uninterrupted provision of crucial health and education services across Mali. This vital funding initiative is designed to address the multifaceted climatic, security, and economic hurdles that the nation has faced in recent years.

Designated as the Emergency Access to Essential Services Project in Mali, this undertaking will bolster the ongoing operations of both national and regional healthcare facilities. Support will manifest through financing operational expenditures, ensuring a steady supply of crucial vaccines and essential medicines, and offering complimentary healthcare to women of reproductive age and children under five. Furthermore, the project aims to enhance the capabilities of health personnel, equipping them to better manage escalating health risks associated with climate change. Within the education sector, the initiative will provide comprehensive support throughout students’ academic journeys. This includes delivering educational materials, distributing school grants to the most vulnerable learners, and facilitating the administration of national examinations.

This strategic intervention plays a key role in advancing the World Bank Group’s employment agenda by diligently working to safeguard and develop human capital within the country.

“By safeguarding access to vital health and education services amidst significant budgetary pressures, this project effectively protects the pool of Mali’s future workforce and their productive potential,” explained Clara de Sousa, the World Bank Group’s Division Director for Mali. She further elaborated, “Healthy, educated children and healthy mothers are fundamental to fostering a sustainable and highly productive labor force.”

The project is set to positively impact 2.3 million individuals who will gain access to essential health services. A specific focus is placed on 1.4 million women and 391,395 children under the age of five. Within the educational sphere, 1.1 million students will benefit from schooling support and assured access to national examinations, conducted under established standards, thereby promoting educational continuity and the advancement of human capital.

This initiative is designed to complement and strengthen the ongoing efforts of development partners. It is founded upon extensive consultations and relies on dedicated coordination mechanisms, all aimed at ensuring its effective and harmonized implementation.
