The closing day of the Ligue 1 season was marred by significant disturbances, as two of the ten scheduled fixtures on Sunday evening were disrupted by pitch invasions. The most severe incident occurred in Nantes, where the match against Toulouse was ultimately abandoned following a chaotic intrusion by supporters.
In Nice, at the conclusion of their game against Metz, fervent ultras breached security barriers, necessitating intervention from riot police to push them back. However, it was undoubtedly in Nantes that the situation escalated into a far more critical state.
At the Stade de la Beaujoire, the Canaries, already facing relegation to Ligue 2, found their final match against Toulouse brought to an abrupt halt. Just 22 minutes into play, the contest descended into chaos as scores of Nantes supporters, many with their faces covered, stormed the pitch, compelling players to retreat to the dressing rooms.
“A complete disgrace”
The match was definitively called off forty minutes later, a heartbreaking conclusion for Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodžić, who was overseeing the final game of his illustrious career from the dugout.
“This is a complete disgrace,” he lamented. “I wished I could have approached the supporters to tell them to stop. While I can fully comprehend their frustration, this is not the way. I have given everything I could as a coach and as a man. Regrettably, the reality we face is simply terrible.”
While the Professional Football League has yet to issue a public statement, the governing body has initiated an investigation. FC Nantes now faces severe repercussions. Beyond a potential temporary closure of stands, the club could incur a points deduction for the upcoming Ligue 2 season.
This mirrors the fate of Saint-Étienne, who four years ago were handed a six-point penalty even before their championship began, following similar types of incidents.
