During a press conference held by the Diomaye Président coalition, Minister Abdourahmane Diouf reacted sharply to the ongoing debate over constitutional revision. He asserted that as long as Bassirou Diomaye Faye leads the country, no one will be able to sow instability in Sénégal. Diouf emphasised that the head of state had already provided assurances in 2024 regarding the preservation of institutional stability and social peace.
The minister also revisited the 2024 electoral timeline, recalling that Ousmane Sonko initially supported postponing the presidential election before eventually backing Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s candidacy during the campaign. According to Diouf, the President of the National Assembly has now distanced himself from that collective effort. He accused Sonko of betraying the head of state and engaging in political manipulation surrounding the proposed institutional reforms.
Diouf further pointed out that previous presidents, despite commanding parliamentary majorities, never used that advantage to amend the constitution in the manner currently being discussed. He argued that if such changes had been made earlier, today’s political actors would not be able to defend the reforms they now advocate.
The minister’s remarks towards Ousmane Sonko grew particularly heated. He reminded Sonko that he had once presented himself as the ‘guardian of the revolution’—a stance Diouf considers incompatible with his current role as head of the National Assembly. ‘We have no use for a fake guide…,’ Diouf fired back.
