Algeria and Niger launch major oil exploration in Kafra basin

In a landmark move for energy collaboration between North and West Africa, the ceremonial launch of the Kafra Sud-Est 1 oil exploration well drilling took place this week in northern Niger. The initiative underscores the growing strategic partnership between Alger and Niamey, marking a pivotal step in regional energy development.

Kafra basin: a new frontier for African energy

The drilling operation is unfolding in the Kafra oil field, a promising geological basin in northern Niger. The event was co-chaired by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Nigerien Head of Government Ali Lamine Zeine Mahaman, who traveled to the site to officiate the start of work.

The Algerian delegation included key figures such as:

  • Mohamed Arkab, State Minister of Hydrocarbons;
  • Lounès Magramane, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • Noureddine Daoudi, CEO of Algeria’s national oil company Sonatrach;
  • Saadi Ahmed, Algerian Ambassador to Niger.

The Kafra Sud-Est 1 well represents Sonatrach’s direct involvement in unlocking Niger’s untapped oil potential, aligning with regional energy security objectives.

From diplomacy to tangible economic cooperation

This project reflects the shared vision of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Niger’s transitional leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani. Both nations are prioritizing stronger bilateral ties focused on mutual growth and regional stability.

Key insight: The launch of the Kafra drilling project signals a shift from diplomatic engagement to hands-on economic and industrial collaboration, especially in critical sectors like energy and hydrocarbons.

Investment momentum driving regional progress

The initiative follows a series of joint projects, including the recent inauguration of the Niamey power plant. It stems from agreements reached during the second session of the Algeria-Niger Joint High Commission held in March 2026.

By fast-tracking these strategic ventures, both countries aim to unlock cross-border investment opportunities and foster sustainable economic development across the Sahel.
