Arthur zagré switches from France to Burkina Faso national team

The Paris Saint-Germain alumni and former youth international Arthur Zagré has made a bold career move by switching his sporting allegiance to the Burkina Faso national team. At just 24 years old, the left-back has decided to represent the Burkina Faso national team, honoring his ancestral roots.

Zagré, who previously earned 23 caps and scored 2 goals for France’s U18 and U19 teams, has spent the past three seasons playing in the Netherlands with Excelsior Rotterdam. This season, he contributed 3 goals and 2 assists in the Eredivisie, showcasing his versatility as a left-back who can also play higher up the flank or as a defensive midfielder.

From Ligue 1 debut to Dutch football

Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris, Zagré began his professional journey in France, making his Ligue 1 debut during the 2019-2020 season under Thomas Tuchel at PSG. Following his breakthrough, he joined AS Monaco but was subsequently loaned to Dijon, Utrecht, and eventually Excelsior Rotterdam, where he found stability. Now nearing the end of his contract in June, he is set to make a fresh start—starting with his international debut for Burkina Faso.

The Burkina Faso national team, currently coached by Amir Abdou since March, will welcome Zagré ahead of their upcoming friendly matches in June against Belarus and Russia. His arrival adds depth and experience to the squad, particularly in the left-back position.

Standing at 1m68, Zagré is known for his powerful left foot and dynamic playing style. His decision to represent Burkina Faso not only fulfills his personal connection to the country but also strengthens the team ahead of future competitions.
