Benin 2060 education strategy: boosting science and vocational training

From August 5 to 7, 2026, the National Council of Education (CNE) convened its third consultative assembly in Cotonou, focusing on the advancement of science, technology, and vocational training. The three-day event brought together government officials, academics, private and public institutions, technical and financial partners, and civil society to chart the future of Benin’s education system.

Driving Benin’s industrial and digital transformation through education

The assembly, held at the Golden Tulip hotel in Cotonou, centered on how education, research, and vocational training can fuel Benin’s industrialization and digital transformation. Participants explored strategies to guide learners toward scientific, technological, and vocational fields, aligning education with the nation’s long-term development goals.

The event gathered CNE members, government representatives, university leaders, public and private institutions, and civil society organizations. The goal was to foster dialogue, share insights, and inform public policy in the education sector.

Key priorities: strengthening science, technology, and vocational education

Clément Chabi, Executive Secretary of the CNE, emphasized the role of education in sustainable development, prosperity, and technological sovereignty. He highlighted the importance of investing in youth, research, and human capital quality as foundational pillars for Benin’s future.

Noël Ahonangnon Gbaguidi, President of the CNE, outlined the council’s legal and strategic responsibilities. The CNE is tasked with shaping major educational policies, coordinating the education system, and monitoring public decisions in the sector.

Evaluating progress and shaping Benin’s 2060 vision

The 69-member assembly, composed of public and private sector representatives, reviewed activity reports and financial accounts. The council then formulated recommendations to enhance the national education system’s performance.

Over the three days, participants assessed the implementation of recommendations from previous sessions. Discussions also focused on improving teaching quality and aligning educational priorities with the Benin 2060 vision.

The CNE views the strengthening of science, technology, and vocational training as a critical lever for driving innovation, supporting digital transformation, and meeting the demands of industrialization.
