CEDEAO and un Women launch green economy gender program in West Africa

Regional initiative to boost gender equality and climate resilience

The Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO) Gender Development Centre (CCDG), in partnership with UN Women and specialized agencies, has validated a groundbreaking regional program in Abidjan focused on gender, climate change, and the green economy. The announcement follows a two-day strategic meeting held on May 15-16 at the CEDEAO Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire.

Program objectives and implementation roadmap

The initiative aims to strengthen regional efforts to address member states’ priorities in gender equality, climate resilience, and ecological transition. It also seeks to mobilize funding for the CEDEAO Gender and Climate Action Plan, ensuring concrete action rather than just policy discussions.

The program’s strategic document was finalized during the Abidjan meeting, with a clear implementation roadmap established to guide its rollout across West Africa.

Key voices on the initiative

  • Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the CEDEAO Gender Development Centre, highlighted that ecological transition presents both challenges and opportunities for women and girls in West Africa.
  • Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, emphasized that this initiative marks a shift from political rhetoric to practical action in addressing climate and economic challenges in the region.
  • Dr Kalilou Sylla, CEDEAO Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, stressed the importance of an inclusive green transition that creates real opportunities for women and youth.

Next steps: Final adoption in Lomé

The program’s final document is scheduled for adoption during a working session in Lomé, Togo, from June 29 to July 6, 2026. This gathering will bring together stakeholders to finalize the framework before its implementation across the region.
