West Africa is set to witness a landmark event in 2026 as Chad prepares to host the African Water Forum in its capital, N’Djamena. Scheduled for July 15-16, 2026, this high-level gathering will convene policymakers, experts, and stakeholders from across the continent to tackle pressing water challenges.
A strategic platform for water security
The upcoming forum, themed “From Vision to Action”, marks a significant milestone in Chad’s commitment to addressing water-related issues. Speaking at a press briefing, the Minister of Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation emphasized the nation’s pivotal role in continental water governance. « Chad stands at the crossroads of critical transboundary water systems, » he stated, highlighting the country’s extensive hydrological assets.
With the iconic Lake Chad as its centerpiece, the nation boasts a network of vital water bodies, including the rivers Chari and Logone, the lakes Fitri, Léré, Iro, and the Bahr Aouk. These resources not only sustain local communities but also irrigate vast regions of the Sahel. Yet, the minister underscored the growing pressures: « Climate variability, rapid population growth, and aging infrastructure are testing our resilience. This forum is Chad’s opportunity to lead the conversation on sustainable water management. »
Water as a catalyst for development and peace
The government’s vision extends beyond mere resource management. It aims to elevate water security to a national priority, recognizing its role in economic growth, social stability, and environmental sustainability. Key objectives include:
- Expanding access to clean water and sanitation for all citizens, particularly marginalized groups;
- Boosting agricultural productivity through improved irrigation to strengthen food security;
- Ensuring sustainable management of shared water basins, such as the Lake Chad and Nubian Sandstone Aquifer systems.
The Minister also highlighted the ongoing collaboration with international partners, notably the World Bank, in developing long-term water projects. A new initiative, aligned with the Water Forward principles, is being finalized to reinforce Chad’s water infrastructure and align with the President’s national development agenda.
« Water is not just a resource—it is the foundation of our future, » the Minister affirmed. « This forum will translate vision into action, ensuring accountability and measurable progress. »
Building a shared future for Africa’s water resources
The 2026 African Water Forum is expected to yield tangible outcomes, including national water compacts for participating countries and robust monitoring frameworks. As host, Chad is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the continent’s water agenda, fostering cooperation, and driving innovation in hydrological governance.
With Africa’s water challenges intensifying, this event represents a critical step toward collective solutions and sustainable development across the region.
