Chad opposition group denounces authoritarian drift ahead of protest
The political wing of the Wakit Tama movement held a press conference to voice strong opposition to what it describes as growing authoritarian tendencies in the government of President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.
Journalists praised as defenders of truth
During the briefing, Wakit Tama highlighted the crucial role played by Chadian journalists, calling them a “bulwark against forgetting and deception.” The movement acknowledged the systematic pressures, threats, and repression faced by media professionals in the country.
Political crisis deepens as activists demand justice
The movement’s spokesperson, Abdelazim Mht Abakar, emphasized the urgency of the current political crisis, stressing that the upcoming popular mobilization on May 16 aims to draw both national and international attention to its severity.
Condemnation of recent verdicts
Wakit Tama strongly criticized the eight-year prison sentences handed down to eight political leaders from the GCAP coalition, labeling the ruling as “outrageous.” The movement accused the Chadian judicial system of being instrumentalized as a tool of political repression.
The organization renewed its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, including former Prime Minister Succès Masra and other detained activists.
Silence of human rights defenders criticized
Wakit Tama also condemned the perceived inaction of human rights organizations and international partners in addressing alleged violations of fundamental freedoms in Chad.
“The Chadian people are not seeking favors or privileges. They demand justice, freedom, dignity, and the respect of human rights,” stated the movement’s spokesperson.
The group reaffirmed its call for nationwide protests on May 16, vowing that citizens will raise their voices against injustice, fear, and the erosion of freedoms.
