Unforgettable chaos at the final whistle
In a dramatic twist to the 34th and final matchday of Ligue 1, the Nantes versus Toulouse clash was abandoned following a pitch invasion and smoke bomb incident orchestrated by Nantes supporters.
A match overshadowed by disorder
With the score locked at 0-0 after 22 minutes, supporters from the Loire Tribune stormed the Stade de la Beaujoire, hurling smoke flares onto the pitch. Referee Stéphanie Frappart immediately halted proceedings, sending players back to the dressing rooms. The match was later declared abandoned on security grounds by local authorities.
“The game has been definitively abandoned due to safety concerns,” confirmed the international match official during a brief press briefing nearly 40 minutes after the interruption.
Tense scenes at Stade de la Beaujoire
Vahid Halilhodzic, Nantes’ veteran coach, remained on the sidelines, visibly distressed as he confronted the unruly crowd before being restrained by security. Later, in the Stade de la Beaujoire corridors, the 74-year-old admitted this would be his final coaching appearance, describing the episode as deeply painful.
While Nantes supporters gradually returned to their stand under heavy CRS escort, sporadic clashes erupted despite the police presence. A crisis cell, comprising prefectural authorities, law enforcement representatives, club officials, and match officials, convened swiftly to determine the fate of the abandoned fixture.
Historic disruption overshadows final matchday
After over 30 minutes of deliberation, referee Stéphanie Frappart and the match delegate addressed the media to confirm the definitive abandonment of the game. Notably, Nantes owner-president Waldemar Kita and his son Franck, the club’s managing director, had left the stadium earlier in the day after sharing a meal with the players.
This season alone, Ligue 1 has witnessed another abandoned fixture—Montpellier versus Saint-Étienne in matchday 26—after smoke bombs were hurled by supporters. Montpellier were subsequently handed a forfeit and their ultras’ stand closed for the remainder of the campaign.
