The Ebola virus disease outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo shows no signs of abating, with health officials reporting 515 confirmed cases and 91 deaths since the epidemic began in the Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces.

Current situation and spread

The latest situation report from the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) indicates that the Bundibugyo Ebola virus strain has now affected 25 health zones across the country. The Ituri Province remains the hardest-hit area, with 17 of its 36 health zones reporting active cases, including critical areas like Aru, Bunia, Mambasa, and Mangala.

The neighboring North Kivu and South Kivu provinces are also experiencing significant transmission, with Katwa in North Kivu reporting 11 confirmed cases and 8 deaths, making it the second most affected zone after Ituri. Other affected zones include:

  • Beni: 5 confirmed cases, 3 deaths
  • Butembo: 4 confirmed cases, 2 deaths
  • Miti-Murhesa: 3 confirmed cases, 1 death
  • Oicha: 2 confirmed cases, 2 deaths
  • Kalunguta: 1 confirmed case, 1 death

Health authorities have confirmed 27 new cases in the last 24 hours alone, highlighting the accelerating spread of the virus despite ongoing containment efforts.

Health system response and challenges

With 283 patients currently in isolation or treatment facilities and 12 recoveries recorded since the outbreak began, health workers face mounting challenges in controlling the epidemic. The 17.7% case fatality rate underscores the severity of this outbreak, particularly given the remote locations and security concerns in affected areas.

Key obstacles to effective response include:

  • Persistent insecurity in parts of Ituri Province
  • Logistical difficulties reaching remote communities
  • Community resistance fueled by misinformation and rumors
  • Limited healthcare infrastructure in affected regions

Health officials continue to urge the population to report any suspected cases immediately and to strictly adhere to prevention measures to curb further transmission.

Public health recommendations

The Ministry of Health emphasizes several critical actions:

  1. Immediate reporting of any suspected Ebola symptoms to health authorities
  2. Strict observance of hygiene measures including handwashing with soap
  3. Refraining from contact with suspected cases or deceased individuals
  4. Avoiding consumption of bush meat
  5. Compliance with vaccination campaigns when available

The situation remains fluid as health authorities maintain round-the-clock surveillance and response operations across the affected provinces.
