In a bold stand against growing repression in West Africa, French Member of the European Parliament Manon Aubry has condemned what she describes as a targeted campaign against LGBTQ+ individuals in Senegal. The left-wing politician, who serves as President of The Left group in the European Parliament, is calling for urgent diplomatic action to protect those at risk and uphold human rights.
Speaking out on social media, Aubry highlighted the alarming escalation of legal and social persecution faced by sexual minorities in the country. She emphasized that recent legal amendments now criminalize same-sex relationships with severe penalties, including prison sentences of up to a decade.
Legal crackdown fuels climate of fear
« Homosexuality is not a crime, yet in Senegal, a new homophobic law now imposes five to ten years in prison for consensual same-sex relations, » Aubry stated. « This is not justice—it is persecution. I stand in full solidarity with those enduring this oppression and demand immediate action to end this injustice. »
The French politician also raised concerns over the arrest of a French national in connection with these charges. She urged the French government to intervene diplomatically, secure the individual’s release, and provide asylum to Senegalese refugees fleeing persecution based on their sexual orientation.
Her remarks come amid reports of increased surveillance, arrests, and public hostility toward LGBTQ+ communities across Senegal. Activists warn that the legal environment is fostering a climate of fear, pushing many individuals to seek safety abroad.
