The Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) has taken a firm stand following the Constitutional Council’s verdict regarding the return of Ousmane Sonko to the National Assembly. In a formal statement, the opposition coalition argued that the judicial decision does not resolve the political tensions surrounding the former Prime Minister’s parliamentary seat.
The FDR rejects the closure of the Sonko debate
While the coalition has noted the high court’s decision—where the judges declared themselves incompetent to rule on the specific allegations of forfeiture—the FDR maintains that this does not diminish the validity of their challenges. They believe the controversy regarding the leader of Pastef remains a central issue for the nation’s democratic integrity.
The FDR has intensified its criticism of both Ousmane Sonko and the current administration. They accuse the ruling power of fostering a climate defined by incompetence and a lack of humility. Furthermore, the coalition pointed to recent public statements made by the Pastef leader to the international press, suggesting that his rhetoric reflects a troubling perspective on national identity.
A call for national mobilization
Expressing serious alarm over the current state of Sénégal, the FDR warned of what they describe as dangerous authoritarian drifts. The coalition emphasized that their struggle will persist, strictly adhering to republican laws and institutional frameworks. They are signaling a shift from legal battles to a broader social movement.
Beyond the specific grievances involving Ousmane Sonko, the FDR is now advocating for the creation of a massive coalition. They have issued an urgent invitation to political parties, civil society organizations, trade unions, youth movements, and all democratic citizens to unite. This proposed front aims to consolidate opposition forces to present a credible and robust alternative to the current regime.
This political maneuver comes shortly after the Constitutional Council dismissed the appeals that sought to block Ousmane Sonko from reclaiming his mandate. While the court’s decision may have ended the legal proceedings, it has clearly ignited a new phase of political resistance from the opposition.
