French national detained in Senegal amid anti-lgbtq+ crackdown

A French national has been taken into custody in Dakar, Sénégal, as part of a sweeping crackdown on perceived violations of the country’s laws regarding LGBTQ+ rights.

The 30-year-old engineer, who has been residing in the capital, faces multiple charges including unnatural acts, criminal association, money laundering, and attempted transmission of HIV. His arrest occurred during a series of coordinated operations targeting individuals suspected of violating Sénégal’s strict anti-homosexuality statutes.

Diplomatic intervention underway

The French embassy in Dakar has confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation. Consular officials have conducted four visits with the detainee to ensure his rights are upheld under international protections. Meanwhile, the French Foreign Ministry remains in regular contact with both the detainee’s family and relevant authorities in Paris to advocate for a fair and transparent legal process.

Legal backdrop fuels controversy

Earlier this year, Sénégal enacted stricter legislation imposing up to a decade in prison for same-sex relations. The move has intensified debates over LGBTQ+ rights in the country and drawn international criticism. France, a vocal advocate for global decriminalization of homosexuality and the elimination of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination, has reiterated its stance in response to the recent developments.
