French national detained in Senegal amid legal scrutiny
A French national has been held in Senegal since mid-February on multiple charges, including allegations classified as “acts against nature.” French diplomatic authorities confirm they are closely monitoring the case.
An engineer in his early 30s residing in Dakar has been held in custody since February 14, 2026, following a broader operation targeting multiple individuals.
Multiple serious charges
The detainee faces accusations including “acts against nature,” criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and attempted transmission of HIV. These charges arise within a particularly sensitive judicial environment in Senegal.
Consular oversight remains active
French authorities report that the embassy in Dakar is actively monitoring the case. Consular officials have conducted four visits to the detainee and maintain regular contact with his family.
Recent legislative shifts
Senegal has recently strengthened its legal framework regarding same-sex relations, with penalties now reaching up to ten years imprisonment. This legislative change reflects a broader hardening of stances on LGBT+ issues across the country.
