Mali has been enduring a prolonged period of both security and political upheaval.

The security crisis is marked by relentless attacks from jihadist and separatist armed factions. A recent notable incident occurred on April 25, targeting the capital, Bamako, claiming the life of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, among others.

Concurrently, a profound political crisis persists, characterized by the suspension of political party activities and the military’s firm grip on power, maintained since the coups d’état of 2020 and 2021.

Mali I Treffen mit Tuareg Rebellen in Kidal

In November 2023, the Malian Armed Forces, supported by Russian Wagner Group paramilitaries, successfully recaptured Kidal, a city that had been under rebel group control since 2012. This renewed offensive effectively sealed the fate of the 2015 Algiers Accord, an agreement forged between the Malian government and northern separatists.

On January 25, 2024, the Malian government declared the “immediate termination” of the Algiers Accord for peace and reconciliation. With the accord abandoned, conflict reignited. By April 25, 2026, separatist forces from the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA) and the Groupe de Soutien à l’Islam et aux Musulmans (JNIM) initiated a coordinated series of attacks across several cities, including Bamako, swiftly re-establishing control over Kidal.

Insights into these developments will be further explored, featuring analyses from experts such as Étienne Fakaba Sissoko of the CFR, Gilles Yabi from WATHI, and sociologist Mohamed Abdellahi Elkhalil.
