How far will the wave of cyberattacks targeting the Senegalese state extend? This question looms large as the nation’s crucial digital infrastructure faces relentless assault. Following incidents that compromised the tax authority’s website in October and the national identity card department in January, the Public Treasury has now become the latest victim of sophisticated hackers.

Individually, these breaches might have been dismissed as isolated technical glitches. However, their increasing frequency and the sensitive nature of the government institutions targeted reveal a deeply troubling reality: the profound vulnerability of Senegal’s public digital systems. This escalating pattern underscores a critical concern for national security and citizen data protection.

The imperative for Senegal to bolster its digital resilience is more urgent than ever. Cybersecurity experts are advocating for the establishment of a dedicated national cybersecurity agency. Such an entity would be crucial for coordinating effective incident responses, fostering centers of excellence, supporting vital research, and actively integrating local specialists into strategic national projects to fortify the country’s defenses.

Mountaga Tall’s family announces legal action

Malian lawyer and prominent politician Mountaga Tall was reportedly seized by armed, masked individuals earlier this month. This incident draws unsettling parallels to the arrest of Maître Guy Hervé Kam in Burkina Faso in January 2024, highlighting a concerning trend in the region.

The leader of the political movement Sens has been charged with “conspiracy against state security” and “criminal association.” The similarities between these two cases are striking: both involved opaque disappearances or arrests, an initial lack of clear official communication, widespread mobilization by legal teams, and burgeoning social media campaigns demanding answers. These events collectively underscore a growing tension between legitimate security demands and the fundamental respect for public liberties in the region.

In DRC, constitutional reform debate intensifies

The debate surrounding constitutional reform continues to captivate the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ejiba Yamapia, president of the Église du Réveil du Congo, has publicly called for a comprehensive overhaul of the 2006 Constitution, which he controversially labeled a “constitution of belligerence.”

Yamapia advocates for a new foundational law that prioritizes national development and sovereignty, moving towards a more presidential system. He urges political actors to prioritize republican consensus over narrow electoral interests. However, these remarks have sparked considerable outrage among segments of the opposition. Prince Epenge, spokesperson for the Lamuka coalition, voiced strong disapproval, accusing the Church of becoming “a soldier serving Félix Tshisekedi’s third term” and directly criticizing Ejiba Yamapia’s stance.

Passing of African Athletics Confederation president

Colonel Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, the esteemed president of the African Athletics Confederation and the Cameroonian National Olympic and Sports Committee, has passed away in Yaoundé at the age of 75. His death marks a significant loss for African sports.

Tributes poured in, including a heartfelt message from Moroccan athlete Aziz Daouda. Daouda lamented that African athletics has lost not merely a leader, but a true activist. He reflected that with Malboum’s passing, one of the last great architects of a generation that envisioned Africa asserting its rightful place in global sports institutions has departed. Malboum firmly believed that Africa was not merely a reservoir of talent for other nations, but was destined to become an organized, respected, and influential sporting powerhouse on the world stage.
