Already assured of a spot in the upcoming Champions League, Manchester United firmly secured their third-place finish in the Premier League standings. They delivered another attacking spectacle at Old Trafford this Sunday, overcoming Nottingham Forest with a 3-2 victory on the 37th matchday.

Manchester United continued its impressive late-season form. Facing a Nottingham Forest side that had already secured their Premier League status but was still reeling from their Europa League semi-final exit against Aston Villa (1-0, 0-4), the Red Devils swiftly seized control, largely thanks to Luke Shaw.

The England international, who hadn’t found the net in nearly three years, broke the deadlock in the 4th minute with a magnificent low half-volley from the edge of the box. Displaying clear dominance, Michael Carrick’s squad created numerous chances throughout the first half but couldn’t extend their lead before the interval, despite several golden opportunities falling to Bryan Mbeumo.

However, against the run of play, Nottingham managed to draw level shortly after the restart. From a short corner, Morato capitalized on loose marking to head home an equalizer in the 53rd minute. Yet, Manchester responded almost immediately through a highly contentious play. Following what appeared to be a handball by Mbeumo in the penalty area – an incident that went unpunished after a lengthy VAR review – Cunha restored the lead for the Manchester side in the 55th minute.

Bruno Fernandes matches premier league assist record

Though active throughout the game and previously unlucky, Mbeumo finally got his reward in the 76th minute, converting a powerful cross from Bruno Fernandes right in front of goal. This marked the Portuguese maestro’s 20th assist of the season, a feat that sees him equal the historic Premier League record previously held by legendary figures Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Nottingham kept the tension high, with Gibbs-White scoring just two minutes later (78th minute), but United steadfastly held onto their lead until the final whistle, concluding a truly vibrant encounter.

Bruno Fernandes now has one more match to potentially break the single-season assist record, as the Red Devils travel to Brighton next Sunday. Meanwhile, Nottingham will aim for a home victory against Bournemouth, who are battling for a Champions League qualification spot.
