Morocco and Philippines strengthen ties, bilateral trade surges 50%
Philippine Ambassador to Rabat, Leslie Baja, has reported a significant increase in bilateral trade between the two nations in recent years, noting a substantial 50% rise, even though current figures have yet to meet the full expectations of both parties.
The relationship between Morocco and the Philippines is built upon a significant foundation, ripe for enhancement across various strategic sectors, as affirmed by Philippine Ambassador to Rabat, Leslie Baja. He expressed his satisfaction with the two nations having commemorated fifty years of diplomatic relations just last year.
In a recent discussion, Mr. Baja detailed a rich historical trajectory for both countries, marked by numerous high-level visits, the signing of various agreements, and the cultivation of robust human connections. He views these as essential cornerstones for the next five decades of collaborative efforts.
Economically, the Philippine diplomat highlighted a noticeable acceleration in bilateral trade volumes over recent years. He pointed out that commerce between Morocco and the Philippines has seen an increase of approximately 50%, although the current figures still fall short of the aspirations of both governments.
Mr. Baja suggested that Morocco, serving as a strategic gateway to both Africa and Europe, and the Philippines, an active member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), possess complementary strengths that could foster even greater economic cooperation.
He emphasized the untapped potential in key industries such as agro-industry, aeronautics, electronics, and textiles. The Ambassador also reminded us that the Philippines stands as a major importer of Moroccan phosphate.
Discussing regional cooperation prospects, the Ambassador lauded the sectorial partnership agreement established in 2023 between Morocco and ASEAN. He believes this accord unlocks a vast array of collaboration opportunities, extending to both bilateral and broader regional levels.
Regarding the Royal Atlantic Initiative, designed to facilitate Atlantic Ocean access for Sahelian states, Mr. Baja commented that this endeavor significantly boosts African regional integration, drawing parallels to ASEAN’s successful model, and promises positive economic, political, and social dividends.
He further elaborated, observing that “Africa’s regional integration will undoubtedly benefit the continent economically and politically, leading to a more politically stable, economically resilient, and culturally vibrant Africa.”
Concerning Manila’s endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Kingdom’s Southern Provinces, the Ambassador recalled that during the Philippine Foreign Minister’s visit to Morocco in 2022, the Philippines acknowledged the Moroccan Initiative as a “solid foundation” for achieving a resolution to this dispute.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 represents a “game changer” in this matter, Mr. Baja noted, conveying optimism for the successful conclusion of the political process.
He also reiterated his country’s commitment to the UN-led efforts aimed at finding a definitive solution to this issue.
Additionally, Mr. Baja spoke about a forthcoming book dedicated to the history of Morocco-Philippine relations, scheduled for presentation this Thursday. He explained that this initiative seeks to chronicle a half-century of cooperation between the two nations and to underscore the contributions made by both Moroccans and Filipinos in fostering closer ties between their respective peoples.
According to the Ambassador, this publication transcends a mere recounting of historical events; it also serves as a testament to the profound human connections that have fortified the relationship between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of the Philippines.
