The monarch designated the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway with the U.S. president’s name, calling it a tribute to Trump’s 2020 decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
«This historic recognition of Morocco’s territorial integrity will forever be etched in the hearts of our people,» the king stated in a July 2 letter. «In return for this gesture of friendship and peace, I have decided to name one of our nation’s most vital roadways after President Donald Trump.»
The highway spans 1,055 kilometers, cementing its status as Africa’s longest road infrastructure. The move comes after Trump’s December 2020 announcement, where he endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara in exchange for normalized relations with Israel. Previously a Spanish colony until 1975, this phosphate-rich desert territory—rich in fish stocks—remains partially under Moroccan control while being classified as a non-self-governing territory by the United Nations.
