Morocco charts ambitious course for tourism, targeting 26 million visitors by 2030

Morocco’s tourism sector demonstrated robust performance, attracting nearly 20 million visitors and generating 138 billion dirhams in tourism receipts throughout 2025. This impressive growth continued into the first five months of 2026, a trend highlighted in a recent statement following the board meeting of the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT), held on June 24 in Rabat.

The crucial meeting, led by Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy, and attended by ONMT Director General Achraf Fayda, provided a comprehensive review of the sector’s achievements. Discussions also focused on the strategic progress towards Morocco’s overarching objective of welcoming 26 million tourists by the end of the decade.

According to data released by the ONMT, international tourist arrivals saw a 7% increase by the close of May 2026. Concurrently, tourism revenue surged by 21%, while overnight stays in classified accommodation establishments experienced a healthy 9% rise.

“The 2023-2026 roadmap has unequivocally shown that by simultaneously focusing on air connectivity, promotion, investment, quality standards, and regional development, Morocco possesses the capacity to expand significantly and compete effectively with the world’s leading destinations,” Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor affirmed.

Further strengthening this trajectory, the board underscored significant advancements in air connectivity. Contracted air capacity for the summer 2026 season reached an impressive 7.74 million seats, marking a 13% year-on-year increase. This expansion was fueled by the establishment of new air bases in key cities such as Rabat, Marrakech, and Tétouan, alongside the launch of 52 new international routes during the first half of 2026.

Looking ahead, the ONMT has outlined several strategic priorities to underpin the 2030 tourism target. These include enhancing air links, diversifying source markets with a particular focus on China, India, and Latin America, developing maritime routes and cruise tourism, and progressively integrating artificial intelligence into marketing and commercial operations.
