Morocco steadfast in supporting Libya’s political resolution
The Kingdom of Morocco has once again voiced its full support for Libya’s political process during a recent session of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (AUPSC). In his address to the council, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Mohamed Arrouchi, underscored the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to Libya’s national reconciliation and inter-Libyan dialogue initiatives.
Arrouchi emphasized that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015, under the UN’s auspices, remains a credible framework for a sustainable political resolution to Libya’s crisis. He called for preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as essential pillars for lasting stability in the country.
The Moroccan diplomat also expressed the Kingdom’s appreciation for the African Union’s relentless efforts to promote peace, security, and stability across the continent, particularly in advancing a political solution to the Libyan conflict. Under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco continues to play a constructive role in supporting these continental initiatives.
Highlighting recent diplomatic breakthroughs, Arrouchi pointed to meetings held in Tripoli and Zintan, which culminated in the signing of an agreement on January 7, 2026, between representatives of Libya’s Government of National Unity and the government based in the East. He reiterated Morocco’s long-standing role in facilitating dialogue among Libyan factions, a role that has earned the Kingdom’s trust among the parties involved.
These efforts align with international legality, the provisions of the Skhirat Agreement, and the Bouznika understandings, aimed at fostering a Libyan-led solution that satisfies all stakeholders. Arrouchi stressed the importance of prioritizing political negotiations over military options to achieve a lasting resolution to the crisis.
