Morocco secures key afcone commissioner role in african nuclear energy
Morocco has achieved a significant diplomatic success, securing a unanimous election as a Commissioner of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) for a three-year term. This pivotal decision took place on Friday during the 7th Conference of States Parties to the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, hosted at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa.
This latest election underscores the profound trust placed in the Kingdom of Morocco, a testament to its consistent royal vision emphasizing peace, security, and development across the continent. Morocco’s leadership is increasingly recognized in addressing crucial regional and global challenges.
The confidence bestowed upon Morocco is further solidified by its pioneering role as a regional hub for the peaceful application of nuclear technology in Africa. The nation actively leverages this advanced technology to tackle pressing socio-economic issues, particularly within the health and agricultural sectors. This includes innovative approaches to mitigate the impacts of water stress and to bolster food security, showcasing Morocco’s commitment to sustainable development through scientific advancement.
The responsibilities of an AFCONE Commissioner are inherently strategic, technical, and diplomatic. As a vital organ of the African Union, AFCONE is tasked with overseeing the rigorous implementation of the Pelindaba Treaty, which is fundamental to maintaining an Africa free from nuclear weapons. This role demands a delicate balance of expertise and diplomatic acumen.
Morocco’s delegation participated in this significant conference, which adopted a hybrid format, under the leadership of Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). The delegation also comprised key representatives from the National Center for Energy, Nuclear Sciences and Techniques (CNESTEN) and the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR), highlighting the comprehensive expertise Morocco brings to this crucial commission.
