The fate of OGC Nice now hangs in the balance as the club prepares to face AS Saint-Étienne in a high-stakes Ligue 1 playoff return match—without a single fan in the stands. The decision, delivered by the French Football Federation’s Appeals Commission, has left the club and its supporters reeling.
The sanction stems from crowd disturbances that marred Nice’s final match of the season against FC Metz on May 17. Initially handed a three-game punishment—two with closed doors and one suspended—the club’s sanction has now been intensified to two full matches behind closed doors, coupled with a suspended point deduction for the 2026/2027 campaign.
An unprecedented penalty
In an official statement, Nice expressed outrage at the ruling, calling it an « aberration » in light of the club’s full cooperation with authorities and the positive feedback received from LFP officials regarding its crisis management during the incident.
The club emphasized that playing a potential relegation-defining match in an empty stadium is already a severe punishment. « Depriving an entire community of such a pivotal sporting moment is not just an athletic hardship—it strikes at the heart of the club’s emotional connection with its fans, » the statement read.
OGC Nice has vowed to take legal action, announcing plans to seek conciliation with the French National Olympic and Sports Committee. Should this fail, the club will pursue the matter in administrative court to challenge the decision.
The playoff clash, now set for Friday evening at Allianz Riviera, remains shrouded in uncertainty as the club weighs its options.
