Nigerian army rescues 360 hostages from Boko Haram stronghold

Nigéria

The Nigerian army announced on Sunday the liberation of 360 individuals who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in southern Borno state, northeastern Nigeria.

The operation took place in the Mandara Mountains, a stronghold of the terrorist group. Abuja has been intensifying pressure on jihadists. Last month, Nigerian authorities announced that a joint operation with the United States had killed 175 ISWAP fighters.

Nigeria faces a severe security crisis, especially in the northern region, where over a decade of jihadist insurgency, along with rising kidnappings for ransom and illegal mining, continues to undermine stability.

The United Nations reports that the conflict in northeastern Nigeria has killed thousands and forced millions to flee their homes. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s repeated promises to end the insecurity, many analysts say the measures taken so far are insufficient to protect the population.
