Ousmane Sonko is no longer Senegal’s Prime Minister, as announced by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

This decision, communicated on national television, puts an end to weeks of speculation about the strained relationship between the two leaders.

The removal of Sonko from office also signals the end of mandates for all ministers and state secretaries within the government.

In a public response, Ousmane Sonko expressed relief on his social media platforms, stating, “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully at the Keur Gorgui residence.”

The dismissal coincides with the dissolution of the entire government, as confirmed by the Presidency. A new Prime Minister and government will be appointed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the coming days.

The political journey of Bassirou Diomaye Faye to the presidency was heavily influenced by Ousmane Sonko. In 2024, Sonko, unable to run due to legal constraints, endorsed Faye as the candidate of their party, Pastef. Faye won the election in a single round with over 54% of the vote, securing a decisive mandate.
