Sénégal: ousmane sonko seeks to calm political tensions with bassirou diomaye faye

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has moved to reassure the nation regarding Sénégal’s political landscape, even as questions persist about the relationship between the executive and legislative branches, particularly concerning President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. His statements come amidst discussions about the new government’s stability and potential parliamentary challenges.

The prospect of a motion of censure against the new government has been a topic of debate. While a general policy statement from the Prime Minister is not legally required, tradition dictates its presentation, often serving as an opportunity to seek a vote of confidence. Alternatively, a tenth of parliamentary deputies can independently initiate such a motion. However, Ousmane Sonko conveyed a message of calm regarding the overall situation.

“There is no institutional crisis in Sénégal,” Sonko declared. “This new configuration in Sénégal has occurred elsewhere without fanfare. The Senegalese people have chosen to entrust the executive to one individual, even if we all know thanks to whom, and the legislative to another, or to a different group. There is certainly a misunderstanding between certain individuals or political currents. But neither the state of Sénégal, nor its institutions, nor its security, nor its stability, are currently compromised.”

This reassuring address follows what is widely perceived as an established political divergence. Political analyst Moussa Diaw suggests that a direct confrontation is unlikely. “Politically, this is not beneficial for them, especially for Sonko, as he would be seen as an obstructionist. I believe they will avoid this power struggle and ensure collaboration while respecting each other’s prerogatives.”

Diaw did identify potential areas of friction, including negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) concerning national debt and the ongoing legal proceedings related to deaths during past political demonstrations. Internally, the cases of dissident ministers and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who remains the honorary president of the Pastef party, are expected to be addressed by the political bureau. Furthermore, Ousmane Sonko issued a firm warning: there will be no postponement of the local elections scheduled for January 2027, which will serve as the next crucial test for Pastef. No decree setting the date has yet been issued.
