Solibra’s eco box project tackles plastic waste in treichville, Côte d’Ivoire

SOLIBRA has officially unveiled its ECO BOX project, a significant undertaking aimed at intensifying efforts against plastic pollution and championing a sustainable circular economy within the Treichville municipality. This launch coincided with World Plastic Bag Free Day, observed on July 3, 2026.

Treichville was specifically chosen for this initiative due to the substantial volumes of plastic waste it generates daily, which frequently clog drainage systems and compromise sanitation infrastructure. In response to this pressing issue, the ECO BOX project seeks to convert these waste materials into valuable resources through a well-organized collection and recycling framework.

This ambitious project is built upon a collaborative partnership involving SOLIBRA, the J’Adore Foundation of Treichville, and BIRWAST, a company specializing in plastic waste recycling. This powerful synergy aims to enhance overall waste management, safeguard the urban environment, and generate fresh economic prospects for the local community.

To facilitate the immediate commencement of operations, essential equipment was provided to the operational teams. This included six wheelbarrows, one collection tricycle, 80 refuse bags, twelve rakes, along with gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms.

Through the ECO BOX initiative, the collaborating partners aim to achieve several key objectives. These include the gradual elimination of plastic waste from drainage systems to mitigate flood risks, the creation of employment opportunities for local youth as collection agents and drivers, and the valorization of collected plastics through efficient recycling processes.

A crucial aspect of the project also focuses on community awareness. Collection agents are tasked with engaging residents, encouraging them to adopt proper waste sorting practices, and fostering a general culture of cleanliness throughout the municipality.

The launch ceremony culminated in a ribbon-cutting event, officially marking the start of the ECO BOX project. This was followed by the presentation of keys for the inaugural collection tricycle to one of the agents, who will now navigate the streets of Treichville to gather plastic waste.
