Suspicion of match fixing involving Ligue 1 player Elye Wahi

The French football authorities have raised serious concerns over a recent Ligue 1 match after detecting irregular betting patterns surrounding a controversial decision involving Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi.

French football governing body Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) filed a formal complaint against unknown parties on May 29 following suspicious wagering activity observed after Nice’s final league game against Metz. Investigators noted an unusual spike in bets placed on Elye Wahi receiving a yellow card during that match.

Legal proceedings initiated

A 23-year-old professional player from Ligue 1 was taken into custody on May 29 as part of a broader investigation into organized sports corruption and fraud. Authorities confirmed that after questioning, the player was released while inquiries continue.

The Marseille public prosecutor’s office emphasized that the investigation remains active and involves multiple charges under anti-corruption and organized crime legislation.

Controversial decision sparks scrutiny

During the May 17 match between Nice and Metz, Elye Wahi received a yellow card at the 36-minute mark for a studs-up challenge on Metz defender Salidou Sané. Replays showed that he could have been booked earlier for a reckless tackle on Bouna Sarr at the 32-minute mark.

The yellow card resulted in Wahi’s suspension for the first leg of Nice’s relegation playoff against Saint-Étienne, a match that secured the club’s top-flight status for another season.

The LFP reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of French football, warning that any attempt to undermine competition fairness will be met with decisive action.
