united nations backs Morocco’s Sahara sovereignty with global support
Forty nations reaffirmed their backing for Morocco’s territorial integrity in the Sahara region during the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The declaration, delivered by Morocco’s UN Ambassador Omar Zniber on behalf of the supporting group, underscored that the Sahara dispute remains aligned with the UN’s political framework under Security Council guidance.
The statement highlighted that Morocco’s autonomy plan provides a credible and practical foundation for achieving a sustainable political resolution, while also endorsing the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2797. The resolution calls for revitalizing the political process with the participation of all concerned parties.
Backers of the initiative praised Morocco’s autonomy proposal and commended its commitment to integrating residents of the Tindouf camps and ensuring their rights as equal citizens. They also lauded Morocco’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, describing it as a positive step toward advancing and safeguarding rights and freedoms.
The communiqué emphasized that the establishment of consulates by several countries in Laayoune and Dakhla reflects growing international recognition of Morocco’s position. It also contributes to strengthening development, investment, and regional cooperation in the southern provinces. The group concluded by affirming that resolving the conflict would serve as a catalyst for integration and progress across African and Arab regions.
