João Palhinha officially joined FC Bayern in 2024 for a transfer fee of €51 million. Recent speculation also linked his former club, Sporting CP, with a potential return for the player. However, it appears the Lisbon-based club was unable to meet the financial demands. Furthermore, Italian giants Juventus Turin and AC Milan are now reportedly monitoring the situation, adding more contenders to the race for Palhinha’s signature.
Despite his hefty price tag, Palhinha struggled to establish himself at Bayern Munich, making only 25 official appearances, predominantly coming off the bench. Last summer, he was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League for €5 million. However, after narrowly avoiding relegation, the London club opted not to activate the agreed-upon purchase option.
Should the transfer to Benfica proceed, Palhinha would become the fifth player returning from loan that Bayern has permanently offloaded this summer. This list includes Alexander Nübel (to Besiktas), Daniel Peretz (to Southampton), Maurice Krattenmacher (to Elversberg), and Jonah Kusi-Asare (to Fulham).
