FC Bayern Munich is actively looking to offload midfielder João Palhinha, who has returned from his loan spell. A significant new opportunity has now materialized for the German giants.

Benfica Lisbon has expressed keen interest in acquiring the 31-year-old defensive midfielder. Portugal’s most decorated club is reportedly preparing a substantial offer of €20 million, potentially supplemented by an additional €5 million in performance-related bonuses. This proposal from Benfica aligns closely with FC Bayern’s valuation, as the German club seeks €25 million for Palhinha’s permanent transfer.

• Should this transfer materialize, it would undoubtedly generate considerable buzz within Portuguese football circles. Palhinha is a product of Sporting CP’s youth academy, Benfica’s fierce cross-city rivals, and made 95 official appearances for them. Ahead of a UEFA Champions League clash between Bayern Munich and Benfica in autumn 2024, Palhinha described the encounter as a “special match,” surprisingly revealing that despite his Sporting roots, his family members were “mostly Benfica supporters.”

  The midfielder, who has openly indicated his willingness to move to the red side of Lisbon, would also be reunited with coach Marco Silva at Benfica. Palhinha previously played under Silva during their time together at Fulham in the Premier League before his move to Munich.

Furthermore, Italian giants Juventus Turin and AC Milan are now reportedly monitoring the situation, adding more contenders to the race for Palhinha’s signature.

  Despite his hefty price tag, Palhinha struggled to establish himself at Bayern Munich, making only 25 official appearances, predominantly coming off the bench. Last summer, he was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League for €5 million. However, after narrowly avoiding relegation, the London club opted not to activate the agreed-upon purchase option.

  Should the transfer to Benfica proceed, Palhinha would become the fifth player returning from loan that Bayern has permanently offloaded this summer. This list includes Alexander Nübel (to Besiktas), Daniel Peretz (to Southampton), Maurice Krattenmacher (to Elversberg), and Jonah Kusi-Asare (to Fulham).
