Bénin and EU forge stronger ties with renewed partnership

On Wednesday, June 24, President Romuald Wadagni of Bénin embarked on a working visit to Brussels, Belgium, to lay the groundwork for a modernized partnership between his nation and the European Union (EU). This renewed collaboration aims to address evolving development challenges and foster long-term growth.

During his visit, Wadagni met with key EU leaders, including European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen, to discuss strategic cooperation pathways.

The meeting with António Costa centered on bilateral cooperation frameworks, with both sides expressing a shared commitment to reinforcing a relationship built on trust, stability, and aligned objectives. A communiqué from Bénin’s presidency highlighted the importance of these discussions in revitalizing ties.

In discussions with Ursula Von Der Leyen, Wadagni and the EU leadership explored ways to deepen the EU-Bénin partnership. Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to accelerating collaboration across critical sectors.

Three priority areas emerged from the talks: economic transformation and innovation, territorial development and security, and sustainable finance.

Economic transformation and innovation took center stage, focusing on industrialization, job creation, expansion of the Port of Cotonou’s economic corridors, local agricultural processing, and youth vocational training.

The second priority, territorial development and security in northern Bénin, involves bolstering local communities to counter violent extremism. This includes strengthening essential infrastructure and expanding economic opportunities.

The third pillar, sustainable finance, ties into the Global Green Bond Initiative, a mechanism designed to fund sustainable infrastructure in renewable energy, transportation, and agriculture.

Ursula Von Der Leyen remarked, “Bénin is a key partner for the European Union in West Africa. This relationship is built on mutual trust and a shared commitment to improving quality of life.”

For Bénin’s leadership, the strengthened partnership aims to position the country as a regional hub for growth, connectivity, and investment in West Africa.
