Benin boosts emergency medical response with 600 new oxygen concentrators

Benin’s medical infrastructure has reached a significant milestone in its modernization journey. On April 16, 2026, the Minister of Health, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, officially accepted a delivery of 600 state-of-the-art oxygen concentrators. This initiative is designed to bolster the emergency response capabilities of 23 healthcare facilities across the nation.

Advanced technology to protect lives

Procured by UNICEF through financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this equipment represents a total investment exceeding $205,450 (approximately 116 million CFA francs). These specific “10LPM single flow” models are engineered to provide a continuous and reliable oxygen supply, which is indispensable for patients experiencing respiratory distress.

This significant distribution focuses on hospitals and clinics located in several key regions, including Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.

A strategic move for maternal and child health

Minister Hounkpatin emphasized that this donation is more than just a technical upgrade; it is a core component of the national strategy to lower maternal, neonatal, and infant mortality rates.

“The availability of medical oxygen is a life-saving necessity,” the Minister stated during the official ceremony. He added that these tools demonstrate the government’s dedication to ensuring every citizen has fair access to high-quality medical services, regardless of their location.

Strengthening international partnerships

The handover ceremony was attended by the Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Wei Zhang, and the UNICEF Resident Representative, Ousmane Niang. The Ambassador praised the robust relationship between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s continued support for the local health sector.

The UNICEF representative noted that these devices, funded through the generosity of individual contributors in China, will substantially enhance the resilience of Benin’s health system when facing critical emergencies. This upgrade to the country’s technical resources aligns with ongoing government efforts to provide more efficient and modern public health services.
