Border patrol operations in northern Benin have yielded a significant result. On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, police officers stationed at the Okpara bridge checkpoint in the Kassouala district intercepted a group of 24 individuals, including a young Beninese man suspected of orchestrating the clandestine journey.
The operation took place during a routine morning inspection at 8:30 a.m. Authorities identified 23 of the travelers as Nigerian nationals of Hausa ethnicity, all en route to Burkina Faso. The group had crossed from Tchaki, a Nigerian locality, into Benin, stopping overnight in Boukouro—a village near the border—before continuing their journey.
According to their statements, the migrants were heading to gold panning sites in Burkina Faso. While all possessed valid identification documents, investigators are probing deeper into their travel arrangements. The main suspect—a 20-year-old Beninese man from Bassila, currently residing in Parakou—is accused of facilitating the illegal crossing.
The detainees were transferred to the Tchaourou police station, where an investigation is underway to uncover potential links to a larger migrant smuggling network.
