German envoy engages Cameroon’s top Catholic leader amid papal visit discussions
Christian Sedat concluded an official courtesy call with Douala’s archbishop this past Monday, marking a significant diplomatic and religious exchange.
The German envoy engaged in constructive discussions with Cameroon’s leading Catholic figure this week, focusing on the Pope’s recent visit to the country.
The diplomatic meeting took place at the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral rectory in Douala, where Christian Sedat, Germany’s Ambassador to Cameroon, paid a courtesy visit to Archbishop Samuel Kleda. Following a warm welcome, the envoy toured the archbishop’s residence and the historic cathedral, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.
In an official statement, the German Embassy highlighted the importance of this meeting, emphasizing the strong ties between Germany, Cameroon, and the Catholic Church. The statement noted that “during his visit to Douala, Ambassador Christian Sedat met with His Excellency Archbishop Samuel Kleda for an open and enriching exchange on the role of religious leaders in society, particularly in light of the Pope’s historic visit to Cameroon. This meeting also underscored the deep connections uniting Germany, Cameroon, and the Catholic Church, with Germany actively present on the ground, listening and engaging in dialogue across the country.”
Diplomat with extensive international experience
Christian Sedat, currently serving as Germany’s Ambassador to Cameroon since July 2025, brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to his role. His career includes key positions within Germany’s Foreign Ministry and diplomatic missions worldwide, including a recent posting as Ambassador to Juba, South Sudan (2023-2025).
Before his appointment in Cameroon, he served as Germany’s Ambassador to the United States and the United Kingdom (2009-2013), where he held positions at the German Embassies in London and Washington, D.C. Earlier in his career, he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Nouakchott, Mauritania (2005-2008).
Strengthening bilateral relations and development cooperation
Since assuming his position in Yaoundé, Ambassador Sedat has been actively advancing key areas of German-Cameroonian cooperation. His work focuses on enhancing economic relations and development partnerships, addressing sensitive cultural issues such as colonial-era cultural artifacts, and supporting grassroots social initiatives, including public health micro-projects.
