The summer transfer window is heating up, with both Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona reportedly keen on securing the services of Julian Alvarez. However, the Catalan giants appear to hold a significant advantage in this pursuit, as the 26-year-old Atlético Madrid forward has been actively pushing, both publicly and behind the scenes, for a move to Camp Nou. Despite Alvarez’s clear preference, football legend Luis Suarez has hinted that any potential transfer might not materialize until next year.

“A player as intelligent as Julian, with the journey he has taken since leaving River Plate, through Manchester City, Atlético, and also with the national team, would arrive and adapt because he would know how to fulfill his role.” Following Pedri’s earlier public welcome for Julian Alvarez regarding a potential switch to FC Barcelona, it was Luis Suarez who offered his insights on this developing transfer situation. The Argentine international reportedly leveraged his participation in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with the Albiceleste to openly express his desire to depart Atlético Madrid, aiming to fulfill his “dream” of joining FC Barcelona.
Leaving Atlético Madrid: a challenging prospect
“He is a player who works incredibly hard. At Barcelona, he would have wingers alongside him who would create numerous opportunities. He possesses excellent passing ability and smart movement. He would integrate immediately into Barça. But there is the other aspect. He plays for a big club like Atlético. It’s going to be difficult for him to leave. The coming weeks are going to be fascinating,” continued the former FC Barcelona striker, who enjoyed a stellar period with the Blaugrana institution between 2014 and 2020. While Barcelona undoubtedly holds the player’s preference, they certainly do not have the approval of Atlético Madrid, who are determined to resist any offers throughout the summer until the transfer window concludes on September 1, 2026.
Suarez’s advice: stay one more year, then choose your destination
Paris Saint-Germain, who have maintained an interest in Julian Alvarez for the past two years, might find their pursuit thwarted for now. However, this could merely be a temporary setback. Drawing upon his own career experience, Luis Suarez recounted how he was held at Liverpool in 2013 before ultimately departing for FC Barcelona a year later.
“These are situations that you create at a given moment. I myself experienced this at Liverpool. In 2013, I forced my departure because I wanted to join Arsenal. I had a dispute with the club because we weren’t qualifying for the Champions League, and I felt I needed to take a new step. I remember the captain, Gerrard, took me aside and told me: ‘Stay. Next year, you’ll go wherever you want: to Barcelona, to Real Madrid, to Bayern… But this year, please, stay. You cannot go to Arsenal.’ And he convinced me. And in this specific case, the same thing could happen to Julián: that Cholo takes him aside and tells him: ‘This year, I want you to stay with us.’ For me, it was a Liverpool legend, the captain, who convinced me. I listened to reason, then I went out to apologize, and it ended up being my best season at the club. Fans, even if you’ve done everything to force a departure, if you then step onto the field and they see you giving your all, working hard, and defending the club, they eventually applaud you.”
