The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is raising an urgent alarm regarding a dramatic worsening of the humanitarian crisis in Mali, as persistent insecurity cripples transport routes and leaves millions already vulnerable in deeper distress.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has issued a stark warning concerning a surge in armed violence across Mali since late April. This humanitarian organization reports that intensified coordinated attacks and escalating insecurity along key transportation arteries are severely impeding the movement of people and essential goods, including fuel and crucial food supplies destined for Bamako.
This escalating security deterioration exacerbates the already dire living conditions for communities grappling with a protracted humanitarian crisis. Obtaining essential services is becoming increasingly challenging, while the dangers faced by vulnerable families continue to escalate.
“growing fear and uncertainty”
According to Matias Meier, the IRC’s Director of Operations in Mali, the situation has significantly worsened over recent weeks.
“Over the past fortnight, our teams have observed an increasing sense of fear and uncertainty among families who have already endured a profound crisis for years,” he articulated.
He emphasized that ongoing insecurity and disruptions to transportation now impede access to crucial healthcare, safe drinking water, and adequate food supplies across numerous regions of the nation. Despite this challenging environment, local communities and humanitarian workers, he noted, continue to demonstrate “remarkable resilience.”
The IRC reaffirms its commitment to maintaining its field presence and ongoing collaboration with local partners and authorities. This ensures its interventions are continuously adapted to meet the evolving needs of the affected populations.
A largely overlooked humanitarian crisis
Mali currently represents one of the world’s most underreported humanitarian crises. Projections indicate that 5.1 million individuals will require humanitarian aid in 2026, a figure that includes over 415,000 internally displaced persons.
Across the nation, communities are contending with a confluence of worsening factors: armed conflicts, climate-related shocks, pervasive food insecurity, and restricted access to fundamental services. Women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities are among the most vulnerable, frequently encountering heightened protection risks and diminished access to essential care, safe water, and sustainable livelihoods.
Adapting interventions amidst insecurity
In response to the rapidly changing situation, the IRC conducts ongoing assessments to ensure the continuation of its programs under secure conditions. Teams operating in affected areas remain at the forefront of humanitarian operations, implementing enhanced security measures wherever necessary.
The organization is also developing flexible and remote service delivery mechanisms, crucial for guaranteeing the uninterrupted provision of vital services in regions most vulnerable to insecurity.
Over a decade of humanitarian presence
Operating in Mali since 2012, the International Rescue Committee actively supports communities impacted by conflicts and forced displacement, particularly in areas where fundamental services are either non-existent or severely disrupted.
The organization implements comprehensive programs across several critical sectors, including health, nutrition, protection, access to water and sanitation, and economic recovery initiatives. Despite significant access challenges, its dedicated teams persist in their efforts alongside local communities in some of the nation’s most isolated regions.
Established in 1933, the IRC currently extends its support across more than 50 countries and 28 American cities, striving to empower populations affected by humanitarian crises to rebuild their lives and achieve dignified living conditions.
