Morocco expands influence with nine key leadership roles in African Union

By securing nine strategic leadership positions across various African Union bodies, Morocco is cementing its significant role in continental governance. From institutional restructuring to migration and environmental policy, the Kingdom is intensifying its involvement in the most critical dossiers for the future of the pan-African organization.

Morocco has further solidified its position within the African Union (AU), demonstrating its ability to shape the institution’s future direction. Following regional consultations for North Africa, the Kingdom was awarded nine key responsibilities within strategic AU structures. This development reflects both the confidence of its African peers and the increasing impact of Moroccan diplomacy on the continent’s major challenges.

This institutional advancement places Morocco at the forefront of North African nations regarding the distribution of regional responsibilities. It comes at a time when the AU is navigating several major projects, including internal reforms, governance consolidation, financial autonomy, and the response to environmental and migratory pressures.

Strategic presence in decision-making bodies

Among the newly acquired roles, Morocco will serve as the vice-chair of the Ministerial Committee on African Candidatures within the International System. This body is vital for aligning African positions and promoting the continent’s representatives within global multilateral organizations. For the Kingdom, this position serves as a platform to ensure Africa is better represented in international decision-making arenas.

Furthermore, Morocco will take on the vice-presidency of the Bureau for the Scale of Assessment and Contributions. While technical in nature, this role addresses one of the AU’s most sensitive issues: financial sustainability. National contributions are essential for the AU’s financial independence and the successful execution of its continental programs. These roles place the Kingdom at the heart of the organization’s structural future.

Focus on justice, economy, and development

Morocco will also participate in two Specialized Technical Committees, which are essential for drafting African public policy. The first focuses on justice and legal affairs, while the second covers economic development, tourism, trade, industry, and mining. This dual involvement highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to the AU’s core agenda.

In the legal sphere, the AU is working to harmonize frameworks and support member states in strengthening their institutions. Economically, the stakes are equally high, with trade integration, industrialization, and the development of regional value chains serving as primary drivers for the continent’s transformation. Morocco’s participation aligns with its long-standing strategy of fostering concrete cooperation and economic bridges across Africa.

COREP: A platform for institutional reform

The Moroccan presence is also being felt within the sub-committees of the Permanent Representatives Committee (COREP). This body manages the daily operations of the AU, preparing decisions and ensuring coordination between member states. In this context, the Kingdom will vice-chair the Sub-committee on Institutional Reforms, a priority area aimed at improving the AU’s efficiency and clarity.

Additionally, Morocco will chair the Sub-committee on Environmental Issues. This responsibility is particularly relevant as Africa faces severe climate change impacts, including droughts and water scarcity. The Kingdom will also serve as a member of the Sub-committee on Human Rights, Democracy, and Governance, participating in vital discussions on the rule of law and institutional strengthening.

Leading the way in migration policy

In another significant appointment, Morocco has been named to the Board of Directors of the Continental Migration Centre. Moroccan experts will also be deployed to support the center’s mission. This role recognizes Morocco’s established leadership in African migration governance, a vision championed at the highest levels of the state.

For years, the Kingdom has advocated for a migration approach rooted in solidarity and shared responsibility, prioritizing the dignity of migrants and the link between mobility and development. Morocco’s involvement in the Continental Migration Centre will allow it to share its national expertise and continue shaping a humanitarian and stable migration framework for the entire continent.
