New partnership to boost clean water supply for refugees in Minawao camp

The Cameroon Water Utilities (Camwater) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) signed a partnership agreement in Yaoundé on 30 June 2026, aimed at sustainably improving access to drinking water for refugees and surrounding host communities, especially in the Far North region.

Camwater and UNHCR are deepening their collaboration to support vulnerable populations. On Tuesday, 30 June 2026, in Yaoundé, the two organisations formalised a partnership deal focused on enhancing potable water supply in and around the Minawao refugee camp located in the Far North region of Cameroon.

The agreement was signed by Camwater Director General Dr Blaise Moussa and UNHCR Representative in Cameroon, Ms Yvette Muhimpundu. This initiative forms part of the “Alternative Solutions for Minawao Camp” project, backed by the European Union, German Cooperation (GIZ), and UNHCR.

Under this accord, Camwater will contribute its technical know-how to the design, construction, and monitoring of water supply infrastructure, while UNHCR continues its efforts to protect refugees and strengthen their resilience, working alongside Cameroonian authorities.

Both organisations aim to improve living conditions for refugees and host communities while addressing challenges tied to population pressure and sustainable water resource management.
