Tensions in Saint-Louis have escalated following a sharp exchange between local political figures. Modou Mbène Guèye, coordinator of Pastef in Saint-Louis, responded bluntly to criticism from Abba Mbaye, who had accused Ousmane Sonko of abandoning allies to consolidate power. The debate reflects broader political shifts in Senegal’s governance landscape.
Accusations and Counteraccusations
During an appearance on a local news program, Abba Mbaye drew parallels between Ousmane Sonko’s alleged strategy and the approach of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. He claimed both leaders sacrificed political allies to secure majorities, stating, « It’s this reshuffling that President Diomaye Faye is attempting with Kiiraay. » Mbaye’s remarks came shortly after his own political realignment in early August, which he justified as a response to the deteriorating state of Senegal’s political climate, describing it as having shifted « from a pioneering model to a circus. »
Mbène Guèye Rejects Criticism
Modou Mbène Guèye swiftly countered Abba Mbaye’s claims, accusing him of political amnesia. He argued that Mbaye had played no role in the election of President Faye and Prime Minister Sonko, despite previously criticizing them. « Abba Mbaye lacks principles, convictions, and ethics—ingratitude is his defining trait, » Mbène Guèye declared. He scrutinized Mbaye’s past statements, including those made after his 2022 election as a lawmaker under Yewwi Askan Wi, where he claimed independence from any political debt.
Mbène Guèye highlighted inconsistencies in Mbaye’s political stance, recalling his criticism of Sonko’s alleged interference in municipal elections and disrespectful remarks about late socialist leader Ousmane Tanor Dieng. He also criticized Mbaye’s opposition to the formation of the 14th legislature.
Pastef’s Local Support Solidifies
The dispute underscores the strength of Pastef’s grassroots support in Saint-Louis. Mbène Guèye affirmed the party’s unwavering commitment, dismissing the possibility of defections to the presidential camp despite potential incentives. He pointed to an ongoing membership drive in the region, which has already distributed 3,750 cards in the commune, with a second phase launching on August 8.
