Pr Jean Gatsi breaks silence after Douala airport assault, reaffirms unwavering support for Paul Biya

Professor Jean Gatsi speaks out after being attacked at Douala airport

Professor Jean Gatsi, a Cameroonian academic and vocal supporter of President Paul Biya, has broken his silence following what he describes as a cowardly assault at Douala International Airport. In a strongly worded statement, Gatsi says the attack was orchestrated to punish him for his unconditional loyalty to the head of state and his public criticism of opposition figures.

The incident occurred when a political activist, identified as his former student Jacques Bertrang Mang, confronted him at the airport. Gatsi has filed a formal complaint with the authorities, stating that the assailant is currently wanted by security forces.

I am paying for my support, says Gatsi

Gatsi believes the aggression is directly linked to his recent activities. He highlights his publication of a 600-page book titled “Paul Biya, the Sanctuary of Peace Facing the Challenges of Contemporary History: The Art of Quiet Strength as a Shield of a Sovereign Nation.” The book, he asserts, is a powerful ideological weapon that threatens those who seek to destabilize the country.

Furthermore, Gatsi recalls his role in rallying academics and civil society to support Biya’s candidacy for the October 2025 presidential election, long before his own party, the CPDM, officially endorsed it. He claims to have vigorously opposed the “illegal candidacy” of Maurice Kamto and debunked the “insurrectional lies” of Issa Tchiroma Bakary. The professor considers the airport attack a direct consequence of these actions.

Unshaken determination in the face of intimidation

Despite the assault, Gatsi declares his resolve remains intact. “No intimidation, no death threat, no cyber-harassment campaign will make me retreat a single millimeter,” he states. He frames his support for Biya as a divine calling, arguing that the president was placed in power by God and that obeying this divine anointment is his duty.

Gatsi dismisses his attackers as “agents of chaos” and “putschists” whose efforts are futile. He announces plans to hold book signing ceremonies across the country, confident in the protection of state institutions. He calls on Cameroonian youth to stand behind President Biya, whom he describes as the only leader who understands their aspirations.

The statement was signed in Kribi on June 20, 2026, with the rallying cry: “Long live President Paul Biya, our eternal compass! Long live Cameroon, one and indivisible!”
