Developing a comprehensive communication strategy has become a central focus for humanitarian efforts across the Sahel region.
Ouagadougou, February 20, 2013 – Leaders from Caritas organizations across the Sahel convened in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, for a critical meeting aimed at consolidating their collective response to the profound food and sociopolitical crises gripping the region. This important gathering, which commenced on February 19, brought together representatives from Caritas Burkina Faso, Caritas Mali, Caritas Niger, and Caritas Sénégal, all members of the Sahel Caritas platform established in 2007.
The meeting, scheduled to conclude on February 23, included key personnel responsible for information dissemination and emergency operations. The primary objective was to forge a cohesive regional communication system among these vital Catholic assistance organizations, enhancing their ability to coordinate and respond effectively.
This initiative forms an integral part of Emergency Appeal 28/2012, specifically titled “Project to strengthen Caritas’ global preparedness and response capacities for humanitarian emergencies caused by the crisis in Mali.”
Father Isidore Ouédraogo, Executive Secretary of Caritas Burkina, emphasized the practical goal of the assembly: to establish a shared operational framework for all communication and emergency managers within the Sahel Caritas network. This framework is designed to significantly improve their intervention capabilities across the affected areas.
The humanitarian landscape remains challenging, with approximately 300,000 Malian refugees currently seeking refuge in neighboring countries, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated regional action.
