heightened Security Concerns in Niamey Following Gunfire and Explosions
The capital of Niger, Niamey, experienced intense explosions and sustained gunfire in the early hours of Thursday, according to a report from Reuters. The incident, which began nearly an hour prior, was still ongoing by 00:12 GMT, as confirmed by the journalist on the ground.
A video shared on the social media platform X captured the chaotic scene, depicting the capital’s skyline illuminated by gunfire. However, Reuters has yet to verify the authenticity of the footage.
A spokesperson for the Nigerien military government, which took power in 2023 following a coup, could not be reached for immediate comment on the unfolding situation.
Niger, like its neighboring countries Mali and Burkina Faso, continues to grapple with a persistent armed insurgency led by jihadist groups affiliated with Al Qaïda and the Islamic State. The ongoing security challenges in the region highlight the fragile stability in West Africa.
