Sénégal challenges Morocco’s CAN 2025 victory at the Court of Arbitration for Sport

Sénégal has formally launched its legal challenge. Following the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) decision to strip the nation of its Africa Cup of Nations 2025 title, the Tribunal Arbitral du Sport (TAS) confirmed on Wednesday that it has received an official appeal from the Sénégal Football Federation.

This move was widely anticipated. Sénégal is seeking to overturn the CAF ruling and reclaim the championship they secured on the pitch during extra time, thanks to a decisive strike by Pape Gueye. The final was marred by tension when the referee awarded a penalty to Maroc late in the game. Although Brahim Diaz failed to convert the spot-kick, the Sénégalais squad briefly exited the pitch in protest before eventually returning to finish the match.

The TAS stated in a press release that an arbitration panel will be established to review the case and determine a procedural timeline. As of now, no specific date for the hearing has been scheduled.

Matthieu Reeb, the Director General of the TAS, emphasized that the institution is well-prepared to handle such high-stakes disagreements. He noted that the court utilizes independent and specialized arbitrators to ensure justice. Reeb acknowledged the urgency felt by supporters and teams alike, promising that the proceedings will be handled as efficiently as possible while maintaining the right of all parties to a fair trial.
