Senegalese Leader Demands Clarity on Local Election Timing
Ousmane Sonko, head of the ruling Pastef Les Patriotes party, used a recent visit to Louga to urge President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to set a date for upcoming local elections. Speaking to an energized crowd of supporters, Sonko highlighted the inconsistency between administrative decrees and election scheduling.

During his campaign-style tour in northern Senegal, Sonko compared the president’s authority to issue decrees—such as those dismissing officials—to the expected decree setting election dates. « If a decree can remove officials like Fadilou Keïta or Waly Diouf Bodiang, why can’t the same mechanism set an election date? » he asked, drawing applause.
The Pastef leader has consistently opposed any postponement of the local elections, suggesting the delay stems from the president’s unease over his party’s growing momentum. Sonko argued that Bassirou Diomaye Faye may fear the « fervor and mobilization » of « patriots » supporting his administration.
