Senegal space week 2026 highlights strategic importance of space tech

The opening of the second edition of Senegal Space Week 2026 witnessed a powerful declaration from General Birame Diop, representing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, emphasizing the nation’s pressing need to harness space technology. Addressing a room of international experts and partners, he underscored that modern security challenges transcend traditional borders, extending into the realm of space and advanced technologies.

Diop stressed that mastering these innovations would empower Senegal to enhance territorial surveillance and combat evolving threats such as terrorism, maritime piracy, and cross-border crime. The minister’s remarks resonated as a call to action, positioning space technology as a cornerstone of national defense and strategic planning.

The Senegalese Space Studies Agency took center stage as Diop highlighted its pivotal role in spearheading groundbreaking projects. He pointed out how satellite imagery, advanced mapping, and geospatial intelligence tools provide invaluable insights for defense and security forces. These tools enable better decision-making and risk anticipation, reinforcing the agency’s contribution to the nation’s safety.

In a significant move, several international partnership agreements were formalized during the event, reinforcing Senegal’s commitment to global collaboration in space exploration and technology. These alliances aim to bolster the country’s capabilities and foster innovation in the sector.

Beyond security applications, Diop emphasized the urgency of cultivating a new generation of Senegalese talent in space, digital, and innovation-driven fields. He advocated for substantial investments in research, infrastructure, and skill development to position Senegal as a leading African hub for space technology. The event also paid tribute to the late General Mansour Seck, a trailblazer in Senegal’s aviation history, honoring his legacy during the ceremony.
