The Bénin and Canada have formalized a long-term political and diplomatic dialogue framework to streamline consultations between Cotonou and Ottawa and ensure consistent follow-up on their shared commitments. The announcement was made by the Beninese Ministry of Foreign Affairs via X on August 5, 2026.
Deepening government cooperation
This agreement was signed by the Beninese Deputy Minister Amori Brunet and Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand. According to the Beninese chancellery, the protocol is designed to « monitor joint commitments, prepare upcoming bilateral actions, and enhance coordination on regional and international issues of mutual interest.»
This initiative builds on decades of diplomatic history since 1962, when both nations officially established relations. Over the years, their cooperation has centered on economic development support, public health, and education. Annual bilateral trade consistently exceeds 40 million Canadian dollars.
Sectoral working meetings at the chancellery
The formalization of this framework follows the accreditation of Canada’s new ambassador, Evedabi, on August 3. The accreditation ceremony led to technical consultations involving key Beninese officials.
Among the participants were the Deputy Minister for External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management, Hugues Oscar Lokossou, and the Minister of Tourism, Foreign Trade, Industry, and Private Investment Promotion, Shegun Bakari. This permanent mechanism reflects a renewed bilateral governance model, underscoring the commitment of both nations to advancing their shared diplomatic and economic interests.
