Benin’s upper house votes through its 2027 operating and investment budget
Senators gathered at the chamber’s temporary premises in Cotonou on Thursday, 17 September 2026, and formally approved the Senate’s operating and investment budget for the 2027 financial year.
Approval follows new financial rules and fits the national budget timetable
The vote came just 48 hours after the chamber adopted its own administrative and financial regulations, marking another concrete step in building out the young institution’s operational framework.
The approved envelope runs into several billion CFA francs, and passing it before the end of September is a legal requirement, not a choice. By clearing its own spending plans on time, the Senate ensures its resource allocations can be folded into the national finance bill, which will be sent to the National Assembly for scrutiny and a vote in the coming weeks.
The plenary was chaired by Patrice Talon, alongside members of the bureau, with senior political figures serving in the chamber in attendance. With the vote, the Senate now has the funding it needs to carry out its constitutional duties over the next year.
